This archipelago, in a radius of 60km (40 miles), contains a multitude of subjects – from waterfalls to mountains, from coastlines to lakes: the Faroe are without any doubt one of the ultimate destinations for landscape photographers from all over the world. Next season, join us to shoot these wild places!
2026
A place where, in a very old fashioned “Icelandic” way, the weather is the undisputed king and can literally change every five minutes.
We’ve chosen the summer season for this workshop as it’s the “least inclement” of the 4 in the whole year – but make no mistake, these islands are continuously battered by the passing storms over the ocean, so there’s never shortage of interesting conditions!
Having a full week at our disposal – we will be able to mitigate (to some degree) the risk of getting bad weather and we will consequently increase our chances of returning back home with some glorious images in our cards.
During summer it’s also possible to see the puffin colonies nesting all over the islands, so make sure to bring your telephoto lenses too if you want to capture these cute birds!
Throughout the week, you will get the chance to visit and capture all the most iconic locations of this archipelago as well as some of the more hidden gems scattered all over these islands, from the “lake above the ocean” (properly called Sorvagsvatn) to the James Bond grave at the Kallur Lighthouse, from the fairytale village of Saksun to the rugged cliffs of Tjornuvik.
Everything is fairly close in the Faroe Islands, which means that we will be able to settle in one accommodation for the whole week in Torshavn without having to move around our luggages every other day – a little but very welcomed plus!
Truth is that we never run two identical workshops – due to the weather, due to the light, due to the length of the days at any given time of the year and a bazillion other variables that come into play when dealing with outdoor photography.
Take this general itinerary for what it is – and by any means don’t think that we’ll stick to it at all times!
Walking/Hiking: Throughout the week we will have to do a few easy hikes to reach some of the most iconic spots. The elevation gain will never be extreme, nor will be the length of the trail. Each participant can skip any of these hikes/walks, but in order to fully enjoy the workshop we recommend to be in good shape so that you can visit all the best spots of these islands. To give you a better idea of what type of hikes we will do, we will list the most important ones down here in the daily itinerary.
The workshop is officially on! Leo will be at the Vagar airport waiting for you: what we generally recommend is to get on a flight that arrives reasonably early in the day, so that you can make good use of Day 1 too!
The other solution would be to arrive a day earlier so that you can just arrive at the airport without any rush on that morning.
Transfer to the Hotel: 10:30AM/12:30PM
The ride from the airport to the hotel won’t be too long: in just a bit more than half-an-hour, we will already be settling into our rooms. We will stay around Torshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands and the bigger town of the whole archipelago. Being centrally located, from Torshavn we will be able to reach all the locations within a one hour drive at most.
Lunch/Hotel Check-in: approx. 12:30PM/2:30PM
After the transfer, we’ll stop for lunch and then we’ll head to the hotel to check in and take a short breath before hitting the road again.
Sunset Session: 3:30PM/5:30PM
Our first official photography session together! Since it’s our first, we’ll have a longer session so that your workshop leader can assess your skills and give you the necessary notions to capture the golden light later in the day in the best possible way given the weather conditions. The light won’t be great – but it’s a moment for you to start getting to know these islands.
Dinner: 6:00/7:30PM
It’s been a long day: finally we will have the chance to sit down and have a warm meal before heading out again to catch the last light of the day!
Sunset Session: 8:00PM/9:30PM
It’s time to go out and shoot our first major location of the trip: Gasadalur waterfall! Arguably the most iconic place of the Faroe Islands, with the waterfall entering the ocean. It’s a fantastic location for long exposures and to capture the sunset as the sun will head down almost in front of us on the ocean. Let’s start the trip with a bang!
Our days will start early on this trip – as the sunrise will be around 5:50AM. On this morning, we will visit Saksun, an idyllic village with the famous moss-covered houses. A location where you’ll get to play with a wide variety of different compositions!
Breakfast: 8AM
After the sunrise session, we will return back to the hotel to get a well deserved breakfast and catch some rest, before heading out again!
Daylight Session/Lunch: 10:30AM/3:30AM
Even if the light might not be ideal, we will still go out as photo opportunities in the Faroe Islands are endless. With their ever changing weather – you might get some of your favorite shots with the harshest light of the day!
Some locations work particularly well with the mid-day light, so we will make sure to cover those and leave the ones that need the warm glow for the golden hours.
Somewhere along the way, we’ll make sure to grab something for lunch too!
Hotel/Small Break: 5:30/6:30PM
After our midday session, we will head back to the hotel to quickly freshen up and take a breath before heading out again for the rest of the evening.
Dinner: 5:30/6:30PM
Today we will have a fairly early dinner, as a boat trip awaits for us!
Sunset Session: 7:00PM/10PM
This evening we will take a zodiac to the Drangarnir cliffs in order to avoid the long hike and be there at the best time of the day, sunset. This is, hands down, one of the highlights of the whole trip! Once we get off the boat, we’ll have to climb up a small cliff to arrive to the vantage point from where we can shoot the whole coastline with the sea stacks in the background.
This little hike will take no more than 20 minutes up on a fairly steep hill. You will have plenty of time to catch your breath and take it as slow as you need as we will arrive there way before sunset.
Our days will start early on this trip – as the sunrise will be around 5:50AM. Today we will head to Funningsfjordur, a panoramic point from where you’ll get to see the ocean making its way through the mountains of the Faroe Islands. Having a view that spans almost 360° degrees, you’ll get to play with a variety of compositions, from wide angle takes to more intimate views!
In order to reach this viewpoint, we’ll have to walk up on a ridge for about 20 minutes, with an elevation gain of 100 meters (300 feet).
Breakfast: 8AM
After the sunrise session, we will return back to the hotel to get a well deserved breakfast and catch some rest, before heading out again!

After our midday session, we will head back to the hotel to quickly freshen up and take a breath before heading out again for the rest of the evening.
Dinner: 5:00PM/6:00PM
Another early dinner awaits for us, as we will have to face a longer hike to the sunset spot today. Each participant can decide whether, instead of having such an early dinner, he/she wants to just bring some food with them to have dinner on location.
Sunset Session: 6:00PM/10:30PM
Today we will face one of the longest hikes of the trip: the trail to Traelanipa, the iconic “lake above the ocean”.
The reason behind this “nickname” is obvious, as you can see from the images down here: from this specific perspective it seems that the lake is floating above the ocean down at the bottom. Probably the most unique location of the Faroe Islands.
In order to reach the famous viewpoint, we’ll have to walk approximately 1 hour (one way) on a mostly even path, with very little elevation gain (150 meters, 500 feet), but with a total length (back and forth) of 9,3km, or about 6 miles.
Our days will start early on this trip – as the sunrise will be around 5:50AM. No hikes this morning! We will visit go shoot some other incredibly photogenic turf houses visible from the road that takes to Gasadalur, with the Drangarnir sea stacks far in the background.
Breakfast: 8AM
After the sunrise session, we will return back to the hotel to get a well deserved breakfast and catch some rest, before heading out again!

Dinner: 6:00PM/7:00PM
A slightly later dinner tonight as we will take it fairly easy at sunset too (no long hikes!).
Sunset Session: 7:30PM/9:30PM
Tonight we will head to the Funningsfjordur Church – a fairly particular black church with the typical moss-covered roof; a gem of the Faroe Islands! No hiking required.
Our days will start early on this trip – as the sunrise will be around 5:50AM. Another easy one today: the plan is to visit the beautiful beach of Tjornuvik, with “The Giant and the Witch” (two iconic sea stacks) in the background. At sunrise, we might get some light on these rocks as well as the hills around. Composition wise, this is one of the locations where you will have more fun: a variety of textures, patterns and leading lines awaits for you!

Dinner: 5:00PM/5:30PM
Today we’ll have a really quick dinner – mostly something along the way to our final destination.
Sunset Session: 4:30PM/10:30PM
Tonight we will take a ferry! After crossing the best part of the archipelago to reach the northern part, we will put our car on a ferry and cross the fjord to reach the island of Kalsoy, on which we will hike to the famous Kallur lighthouse. Probably one of the most incredible places of these islands. This is the point where James Bond was buried (symbolically obviously) in the last movie (No Time to Die)!
The hike will last about 45 minutes to an hour one way, mostly on meadows; the elevation gain is around 350 meters (1100 feet), for a total length of 3km (2 miles).
A small disclaimer: we will only visit Kalsoy if conditions will allow. The local ferry company can change/cancel the schedule at any time if the weather is sketchy or if the sea conditions get a bit rough – and the last thing we want is to be stuck for hours (if not the night, since they don’t run 24 hours!) on a island with pretty much nothing around. Your tour leader will check the forecast/ferry schedule and evaluate whether you can go or not.
Our days will start early on this trip – as the sunrise will be around 5:50AM. This morning we will visit a fairly easy location: the winding road of Nordradalur, on top of a mountain pass! This little road going down to the bottom of the fjord, surrounded by the mountains with an island in the background is as picture-perfect as it can get.
Breakfast: 8AM
After the sunrise session, we will return back to the hotel to get a well deserved breakfast and catch some rest, before heading out again!

Dinner: 5:30PM/6:30PM
As usual, we will have a fairly early dinner before going out for one last sunset session!
Sunset Session: 6:30PM/9:30PM
The last sunset session will be a special one: we will visit a fairly unknown location, a vantage point over a gorgeous fjord surrounded by mountains. Let us surprise you with this one!
Even if we mention one last sunrise session in this itinerary – we will evaluate whether it’s worth going out based on several different factors: departure times of all guests, weather conditions, etc. If we see that there’s hope for some great conditions at some spot where we had bad luck before, we might head back there – if not, we will let you pack all your things up before your flight with calm.
Breakfast: 8AM
After the sunrise session (or after a good sleep, in this case!), we will return back to the hotel to get breakfast before heading to the airport.
Departure: 10:30AM/12:30AM
We recommend booking a flight that will leave after (or around) 12:30PM; the ride from Torshavn to the Vagar airport is about 50 minutes, so that means leaving the hotel around 9:30AM at most. This will give us enough time to pack things up, get breakfast and do the check out!
– Scroll down, find the “book now” button, fill in your details and follow the process to the check-out. You will be able to leave a refundable deposit (500€ x person most of the times) via credit/debit card, bank transfer or even Paypal.
– Scroll down to the very end of the page to find the contact form or visit the “Contact Us” page to, well.. Contact us! We will be more than happy to help you with any request you have and set up the ideal workshop you have in your mind – and ultimately give you all the details to complete the deposit and secure your spot on the tour.
In either case, we only ask for a 500€ deposit to confirm your spot – we will then reach out around 2 months before your workshop starts with a link to complete the remaining part of the payment. If you booked last minute and need to pay the entire quote right away – we will be in touch as soon as we receive your reservation with the aforementioned link!
Why? So that you to get your own room for yourself without having to share it with anyone else. The single supplement is something we add at cost price (if not less), and as annoying as it might be, that’s something that unfortunately we can’t avoid.
That’s also how we manage to guarantee every workshop departure, even if you are the only participant for that date.
Of course you can opt for the single supplement even if you are traveling with friends and you like to have your own personal space.
– Digital Camera (preferably a DSLR or mirrorless camera, APS-C, micro 4/3 and FF will be more than fine);
– An ultrawide lens (e.g. Nikon 14-24mm, Canon 16-35mm, Tamron 15-30mm, Tokina 16-28mm etc); we recommend a lens with a wide maximum aperture (like f/2.8) in case we might do some night photography.
– A standard zoom lens (e.g. Nikon/Canon/Sigma 24-70mm or 24-105mm);
– A telephoto zoom lens (e.g. various Nikon/Canon/Tamron/Sigma 70-200mm);
– A super telephoto zoom lens (e.g. Sigma/Tamron 150-600mm); this lens is not necessary but we recommend it anyway since it allows to capture the far away details of the landscapes;
– A sturdy tripod that permits to do some long exposure photos, specially at twilight;
– A set of ND filters; these are the only filters we feel to recommend, since they become useful when you need to stretch the exposure time a little bit during some difficult light conditions;
– A camera remote to avoid blurry shots.
Well then, this workshop might be the one for you!
Andre Erlich2024-10-14Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. A great tour in spite of some weather hostility. Leonardo is a great guide and knows probably every photo opportunity in every light situation. He's also extremely helpful with composition and other photography techniques. Although I consider myself an experienced (amateur) photographer, I still learned quite a lot from Leonardo. I strongly recommend this tour with this guide. Thank you Leonardo for your guidance and insights Andre Erlich, Paris, France Beth F2024-09-25Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Don’t hesitate to book a trip with Leo at Tuscany Photography Tours. Your experience will cover everything from camera instruction, to finding locations to best capture what Tuscany has to offer, to local history…to dining at some of the best local restaurants in Tuscany. Leo is very organized and has the perfect disposition to make the trip instructive, as well as fun. His help with how to handle the raw files after the photo shoots is an added plus. Leo makes the trip easy for the guests by doing all the prep work, including booking the hotel. He also knows how to be flexible with the schedule based on weather and light conditions. You won’t be disappointed by joining him in Tuscany, or one of his other main locations. Enjoy it! Peggy Swords2024-05-19Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Leo is the perfect choice for a photographic tour of Tuscany. He has detailed knowledge of the places to shoot, in which weather, and what time of day to optimize your time in Val D'Orcia. He combines that with charm and wit to keep you entertained during the waiting times, drives, and meals. He also selects fantastic local Agritourismo locations for your stay and local, often family-owned restaurants for your gastronomic delights while on tour with him. There is just no comparison! Janet2024-05-09Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have just returned from a delightful week with Tuscany Photography Tours, led by Leonardo Papèra (Leo). A native Tuscan, Leo is an expert in the region, an accomplished photographer, a gifted teacher and a delight to have as a guide of the Tuscany region. We travelled to well known key photography locations as well, lesser-known places for beautiful shots that provided us great learning opportunities as well as unusual beautiful photos. Leo quickly assessed each of our technical and composite skills and tailored his teachings and support to each of our individual needs. His full attention was on his clients at each photo shoot. Unlike some tours I have experienced, he approached each of our photo sessions as a workshop and I have come away from the week with a significant advanced knowledge of composition, how light plays in photography and an understanding of the need to 'see the story' before I take the shot. Leo's goal was to ensure that each of us walked away better photographers. In addition to his own personal photography skills, Leo is a born teacher; he is professionally critical in his feedback. As I continue my photography journey, I will carry with me, his encouraging words - 'you can do better'. He has built relationships in the Tuscan community with local establishments which meant each day we dined in beautiful restaurants and ate delicious Tuscan food. Every meal with Leo meant joyful conversations, laughter and sometimes more lessons. In addition to beautiful photography sessions in historic Tuscany, he spent time walking through how he produces the photographs in Lightroom and Photoshop. He freely shared his knowledge in pre and post photography and provided us tools to move forward on our own. And last, with his easy style and sense of humour - the week was absolutely delightful. As I move forward in my own learning of photography, I will be following Leo and looking for future workshops with him. Thank you, Leo! Patricia López2024-05-08Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Leo is an extremely talented photographer, very professional and generous. I participated in the Tuscany Spring Tour and had a wonderful time! He not only cares deeply about teaching his art, but also about providing his customers with an authentic Italian experience. He is careful in selecting a combination of locations that include famous sites, hidden gems and various types of environments that can provide different learnings. I was very surprised to find out that the tour also included some walks around different towns in Tuscany. During the tour, Leo provided thorough explanations to help us improve our photography skills, but first challenged us to think of the solution ourselves. His editing workshops were amazing, he showed us how he edited more than 8 of our own pictures, which was also recorded for our benefit. In general, I was shocked to learn how many tours he leads (many), because of the commitment he brings to each one of the participants. Thank you for a wonderful experience! Leo is not just a passionate and very skilled photographer, he is a patient teacher and fun and resourceful guide. Arun R2023-11-08Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Leo was an excellent guide. I don’t say that lightly as not all photography experts are great guides with good interpersonal skills, but he definitely meets both requirements. Coming from such a long way away, it was important I found a guide who was prepared to take me to more adventurous and remote locations in the Dolomites rather than just doing the typical shots everyone does, and once Leo understood what I was after, he carefully planned on location at the right time. I think he would be one of the best photography guides running tours in the Dolomites. Being a fairly independently minded photographer he was able to read this correctly and didn’t try to over coach me but offered helpful advice when it was sought. Leading up to the trip, I asked many questions and he was patient and helpful each and every time and went above and beyond to organise an outstanding experience for me. I don’t regret going with him at all and hope we can travel together again as we had a lot of laughs along the way. Thanks mate! It was a pleasure. Thank you for some life long memories. Mark Brown2023-10-27Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Experience of a lifetime! Leonardo is the best host imaginable for a photo tour - fun, friendly, kind, supportive, knowledgeable, and intensely capable. His ability to help tour members with their compositions, photo settings, and even post-processing is spot-on, yet at no point did he boast about his own work or look down on the tour members. Even if you're more interested in going along for the ride than taking photos (perhaps accompanying a partner), you'll have a blast, with Leo arranging magnificent hotels, meals, and places from which to enjoy the majesty of this world, or even a bit of shopping. The all-inclusive formula also means that you can leave all the logistics of hotel check-ins and meal payments up to him (and his perfect Italian). The route we took through the Dolomites was perfectly planned to start with a "Wow" and then build upon it each day. By the final location, we were absolutely awestruck. Leo was able to easily adjust plans based on inclement weather, and at no point did we feel shortchanged. If you're considering booking one of his photo tours, stop thinking and just do it. 🙂
